What do mouthwash, fabric softener and red wine have to do with hair? They can give you a long, silky, luscious mane. Caution: If you rinse in hot water, it will be impossible to get the eggs out of your hair.

For lather and strengthening: Mix an egg into your regular shampoo.

For thick hair Add a tbsp of powdered gelatin to your shampoo.

Hair shiners Add 1/4 cup vinegar to 1/2 cup water. Use as a final rinse

Conditioner for dry hair Mix 1 egg, 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp olive oil. Apply to wet hair. Cover with a shower cap or layer of plastic wrap. Leave on for at least 30 minutes before shampooing.

Nourishing hair pack Mash an overripe avocado and blend through dry hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes. Shampoo thoroughly.

Yoghurt conditioner Use plain yoghurt as a conditioner or final rinse, or rub in after shampooing. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Hot oil treatment Mix 1 cup olive oil and ¼ cup butter. Microwave for one minute. Leave on for 20 minutes and shampoo.

Treatment for oily hair Mix ¼ cup aloe vera gel to ½ cup shampoo and apply to your hair.
Rinse well.

Treatment for dry hair Mix 1 tbsp honey to 2 tbsp shampoo and rinse well.

Natural colour enhancer Brew strong coffee and apply to dry hair. Leave on for 30 minutes. This will add sparkling highlights to black or dark brown hair.

Natural styling Flat beer is a cheap, but effective styling tool. Pour a small amount in a spray mister (available at florist shops and Beauty Centre). Spritz on before setting hair. Beer will also give life to a tired perm or naturally curly hair that tends to droop.

Damaged hair repair Mash a ripe banana and mix with a few drops of almond oil. Massage the entire head. Leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.

Residue removal To completely remove residue from hair, combine equal amounts of baking soda and shampoo. Let it set for five minutes before rinsing.

Dry cleaning When you don’t have the time or resources to wash your hair, take either 2 tbsp cornstarch or 1 tbsp talcum powder and brush through your hair to get rid of oiliness.

Wet hair look Wet your hair, run styling lotion or gel throughout. Spritz hair spray onto a hair brush and brush your hair back, letting the sides curve down. Finish with more spray.

Fabric softener The best leave-in conditioner is nothing other than room fabric softener. It’s very strong, so be sure to dilute it. For instance, ½ cup fabric softener should be diluted with 1 cup water.

Red wine Neutralise chlorine colouring by dabbing a little red wine onto your hair. Use it as a precaution before entering the pool. You can also dab it on before shampooing.

MouthwashMix ¼ cup mouthwash with 1 cup water. Apply to your scalp as a cleaner after shampooing. Do not rinse.

Rules to live by The shorter your forehead, the longer your bangs should be.

Protect your hair, as well as your skin, from the sun. Use a sunscreen on hairline parts. Lip balm will also work.

Occasionally shampoo hair with mild dish washing detergent to get rid of product build-up.

Don’t smile when the hairstylist is cutting your bangs. Smiling raises your forehead, and your bang may be cut too short.

Don’t cross your legs when the stylist is working on your hair. It will make you sit unevenly, and one side of your hair may end up longer than the other.

Don’t try to style soaking wet hair. Get it 80% dry first.

Hold your head upside down while drying for extra lift.

A vent brush will give your hair more volume.

Tease your hair with a toothbrush or baby comb. The small bristles will add a lot of volume to small sections of your tresses.

Never wash hair with hot water.
Take a strand test to ensure you are using the correct shampoo for your hair type. If it snaps easily, your hair is fine or oily. If it’s hard to break, your hair is coarse and dry.
