Kitchen Tips

You can clean a greasy oven with very little labour. Just put a saucer of household ammonia inside it and leave over night with the door closed. The ammonia fumes will work on the grease and it will come off easily next morning.

Always heat the oven to the required temperature before starting to bake a cake. Once the mixture is ready it should popped straight into the oven, not made to stand while the oven is still getting hot,or the cake will not rise.

To prevent a cake from burning, put double fold of greased paper, at the bottom of the cake tin and on top of it while baking.

When making idli mixture, mix it thoroughly the night before. put it into a deep bowl and tie a thick cloth on top of it. Don't stir the batter next morning, just pour it into the moulds and you will be surprised at the light spongy idlis you get.

To whip cream well, chill the bowl in the freezer or on ice. Then whisk the cream lightly, as soon as the whisk leaves a trail in the cream, stop beating it, otherwise it will turn into butter.

For hand washing dishes add a few tablespoons of vinegar to the washing up water. You will find vinegar will cut through grease  and your dishes will sparkle.

Test whether an egg is fresh by placing it in a container of water. If it floats to the top it isn't and should be thrown away.
